A co-worker just received some pretty devastating news yesterday that she most likely has Stage 4 cancer, and will start treatment in March after more tests to see if she is strong enough to handle the rigorous treatment. We are all praying for her.
A co-worker and I want to make her a comfort quilt, and only have a very short time to do it. I need any help you can give me with a quick & easy pattern. I’d like to gather signatures from our co-workers to incorporate into the quilt. I plan to go shopping this weekend to gather what I need to make the quilt, and prepare some blocks for signatures on Monday. I’m thinking pre-cut layer cakes or charm squares might be the way to go, but am open to ideas with FQ’s as well. Large block sizes will probably be a good thing.
Any ideas or links where I can find a pattern?
Thanks for your help!
This is a snow ball block and would be easy and quick to whip up. Has a lot of space for a message from a fellow worker and a layer cake would probably work well.

I see it got cut off but hopefully it did't get cut off on the email you should get.
ReplyDeleteThe snowball is a great block for signatures. Set it with same size 9-patches and you will have a beautiful keepsake quilt. You can do the blocks in just about any size. If you go with a 12 1/2" block, several people can sign each one. You can even hand write inspiration messages or words of encouragement. What ever you decide to do, it will be cherished. be good cw
ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest a snowball block myself, because it would be nice to write more than just one's name for a comfort quilt. Since everyone has been of the same mind, I think you have your easy quilt pattern perfect for the desired outcome!! Happy stitching. (I'll also be praying for your friend at this difficult time.)
ReplyDeleteNot being a quilter, I can't help, but I did want to stop by to let you know I'm sorry about your friend. I hope things work out well for her.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking possible a rail fence (like this example: http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/1462433370047236814rQiQlY) or just plain rectangles (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/1174437898046404172SikbII) or as an alternate to snowballs (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/1073762475043518025YJUxdL)
ReplyDeleteSorry about your co-worker, I hope the treatments will work for her.
ReplyDeleteA comfort quilt is such a great idea, and the snowball block would work well for signatures plus words of encouragement.
Follow me to my new blog,---podesigns2---(old one was causing problems that I did not know how to fix).

I'm sorry to hear your sad news. I'm recommending rail fence. You can completely strip piece it as a 6 inch block with a 2x6 space for writing or a 12 inch block with a 4x12 space, or a combination of both to accomodate both people who want to say more and those who only want to sign with a good wish. Take care. Lane
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your co-worker. My father-in-law has colon cancer and I made him a rail fence quilt from flannel. After radiation she will get the chills and a nice flannel quilt will warm her body and with the signatures her heart too. You could do as Lane suggests or use signature blocks on the back of the quilt, sewn on or as part of the backing. Sending prayers. Snowball blocks are good as well. It just depends on the look you want. Personally I think the rail fence sews up more quickly.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your friend. Will keep her and her family in my prayers.
